Election day in Vancity — get out and vote before tonight
It's voting day in BC. Cool and cloudy this morning, plenty of time to cast your ballot and catch something fun tonight.
Alright, Saturday's here and you know what that means — it's BC election day. Get your vote in whenever works for you today; polls close at 8 PM. There's a lot riding on it: the NDP and the Conservatives are both making real pushes, and even here in Van there are some tight races. Vancouver-Quilchena's been an unexpected battleground, and we've just elected our youngest city councillor ever at 21, so there's real momentum in local politics right now.
Weather-wise, you're looking at 7°C and cloudy through the day. Not harsh, but it's definitely jacket weather — the kind of October Saturday where you don't need to overthink it. Sunset's at 6:05 PM, so if you want to squeeze in a park walk or grab some air this morning, there's still a solid window before the light drops.
One heads-up on transit: if you're catching the 129 Patterson, there's a detour running from tomorrow through Wednesday nights (7 PM to 5 AM each time) due to construction. From Sunday through to mid-week, the temporary terminus is at Holdom and Sumas, then back on the regular route. Nothing affecting you today, but worth clocking for next week.
On the food front, there's some real movement. Hook Seabar on Denman's closing after nine years — if you've been meaning to go, last chances are coming up. If you're craving something new, Le Tigre and Toki Doki are reuniting for one night of Japanese street food at Torafuku on Main Street, which is the kind of thing you want to jump on when it happens. Baan Lao's team also opened two new concepts on Granville Island this summer worth exploring, and there's The Moon, a new martini bar in Gastown from Felix Maristany with Spanish-Cuban cooking if you're in the mood for that vibe.
Tonight's got options depending on your energy. If you want to catch live music, Josh Johnson's doing comedy at the Vogue Theatre at 5 PM, Jon and Roy are at the Hollywood Theatre at 6 PM with folk vibes, and Moontricks are at the Commodore at 7 PM if you're leaning electronic. There's also UBC Thunderbirds Volleyball taking on Calgary at 4 PM if you want to catch a local game. The Chilliwack Jets are playing the Coastal Tsunami out in Gibsons at 5 PM if you're up for the drive.
Get your vote in, grab a coffee, catch the daylight while it's here. See you out there.
