Mild Monday in Vancity, with a few things to dodge on the way in

Morning, Vancouver. Mild start to the week, and I mean mild by late October standards: 12°C and mostly cloudy, with UV sitting at 2.0, so you won't need sunscreen but a light jacket will do you fine. It's warmer than the last few days, which means the coat you've been hauling around can probably stay on the hook until you're heading out after dark. Sun goes down at 6:02 PM, so you've got a good stretch of daylight for anything after work, and the walk to a patio or the seawall should feel pleasant.

If you're riding the Canada Line today, know that the elevator from the concourse to the Waterfront-bound platform at Broadway-City Hall goes out of service at 12:00 PM, so give yourself a few extra minutes or take the stairs if your legs are up for it. The elevator at Waterfront from the Granville and Hastings entrance to the concourse is also out for now. On Denman, the northbound stop at Comox is closed for construction through November 13, so if you normally catch the bus there, look for the next stop up. There's also a southbound closure at Robson on Thursday, October 29, from 10:30 AM to 2:00 PM, which is worth remembering if that's your route later in the week.

In the news, Uniqlo is opening its first downtown Vancouver store at CF Pacific Centre in spring 2027, taking over the former Nordstrom space. Over in North Vancouver, the province has approved $400,000 for a young boy's treatment in Germany for a rare brain disorder, which is the kind of story that makes the whole city pay attention. Delta's South Surrey Greenway expansion is set to start construction in 2028 with an $11 million budget, so that's one to watch on the longer horizon.

For food, I'm sorry to say Hook Seabar on Denman Street is closing after nine years, so if you've got a last visit in you, don't wait. On the bright side, Baan Lao's team is opening two concepts on Granville Island this summer, and if you're craving something different tonight, Le Tigre and Toki Doki are reuniting for one night of Japanese street food at Torafuku on Main Street. B.C.'s first Greek frozen yogurt shop has also opened in Metro Vancouver, if you need something sweet after dinner.

Tonight there's plenty on: XCOMM at the Commodore Ballroom at 7:00 PM, and at the Orpheum, Silent Movie Mondays is screening Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde at 7:30 PM, with a Vancouver-themed silent film on the same bill. Microwave and Free Throw with Carly Cosgrove are at The Pearl at 7:30 PM. Since it's mild and mostly dry-looking, a walk down to Granville or the seawall before the show would be a good way to shake off the Monday.

Have a good one, and see you on the street.
