Tuesday in Vancity: cool, cloudy, and a good night for live music
Ten degrees and mostly cloudy, a couple of transit detours to plan around, and Julia Jacklin at the Commodore tonight.
Morning, Vancity. It's a cool, grey Tuesday, 10 degrees and mostly cloudy, with a UV index of 1.0, so you won't need the sunscreen today, though a jacket is a must. Sunset is around 6:00 PM, which gives you about ten hours of daylight, so if you're planning an after-work walk on the seawall or a loop through Stanley Park, you've got time, just keep an eye on the clock once the light starts to go.
For getting around, the main thing to plan for is at Braid Station on the Expo Line, where the up escalator from the Compass vending machine level to the Waterfront-bound platform is out of service for now. Give yourself a little extra time or use the stairs if you're able. Metrotown has a similar situation: the up escalator from the Telford Ave entrance to the platform is down until 4:00 PM today for maintenance, so if you're heading that way this afternoon, check your route before you leave. Longer term, the elevator at Patterson Station closes November 3 for replacement until spring 2027, and the King George Station Platform 1 elevator closes October 20 for the same stretch. Both will add around 20 to 30 minutes to your trip if you need a detour, so if you rely on either one, start figuring out your alternate route now.
A few local stories worth knowing this morning. Vancouver voters have approved $790 million in borrowing for the city's 2027-30 capital plan, which is a big number that will shape a lot of projects over the next few years. Over in West Vancouver, students have launched CareQuest, a program pairing seniors with youth volunteers, which is a nice bit of good news to start the week. And if you've been following the provincial scene, the premier-designate, Lorne Doerkson, has a tight window to get tax cuts moving in his first 100 days. Downtown, UNIQLO is set to open its first Vancouver store at CF Pacific Centre in spring 2027.
On the food side, Hook Seabar on Denman Street is closing after nine years, so if you've been meaning to go, don't wait too long. Baan Lao's team is opening two concepts on Granville Island this summer, which is worth remembering for later. And if you're craving something a bit different tonight, Le Tigre and Toki Doki are reuniting for one night of Japanese street food at Torafuku on Main Street.
Tonight the live music is the move. Julia Jacklin takes the stage at the Commodore Ballroom at 7:00 PM, ARTMS brings the Art of BLUE BLOOD tour to the Vogue Theatre at the same time, and there's Amble with Vincent Lima at the Orpheum at 8:00 PM if you want something folkier. All of those are indoor shows, which is perfect with the grey skies. If you're a sports person, the Surrey Eagles play the Langley Rivermen at George Preston Recreation Centre at 11:00 AM, so that's one for the weekend crowd or a mid-morning detour.
Looking ahead, the weekend is stacked. beabadoobee brings her indie-pop run to Rogers Arena, Joy Oladokun plays a soulful show on Wednesday night, and there's orchestral Beethoven on Thursday, so you can plan a long weekend of concerts if you're so inclined.
That's your Tuesday, neighbour. Dress warm, leave a bit of extra time for the transit detours, and enjoy the show tonight.
