Cool, grey Wednesday in Vancity — here's your run of the day

Morning, neighbour. It's a cool one out there, 6°C and mostly cloudy, so grab the warm layer before you head out the door. The UV is basically nothing today, so no sunscreen needed for the walk to the bus. Enjoy that, because sunset comes early at 5:58 PM, which means if you're planning anything after work, you'll be doing it in the dark. Plan your evening lighting accordingly, and bring a jacket for the walk home from any show.

If you're riding the Canada Line, the elevator at Vancouver City Centre Station between street level and the concourse is out of service starting at 5:45 AM, so budget a few extra minutes or take the stairs if you can. On the Expo Line, the up escalator from 8th Street to the concourse at New Westminster Station is also down, so give yourself some slack there too. The 100 Marpole Loop is on detour from 7:00 AM to 7:00 PM today, with the usual stop skipped and the bus rerouting through Granville and 71 Avenue, so if you ride it, check your stop before you head out. If you're out in Carvolth after dark, note the 388 is on a nightly detour through to Friday, running 8:00 PM to 6:00 AM, so the route is rerouting through 156 Street and 92 Avenue around a road block.

The big political story is the handover at City Hall, where Ken Sim is passing the mayor's office to the Green Party's Pete Fry. Provincially, the Conservatives' Lorne Doerkson is premier-designate and already facing a time crunch to get his tax cuts done within his first 100 days, and Vancouver voters have also signed off on $790 million in borrowing for the city's 2027-30 capital plan. On a warmer note, West Vancouver students have launched CareQuest, pairing seniors with youth volunteers, which is a nice thing to read over your coffee.

For food, it's a bittersweet one. Hook Seabar on Denman Street is closing after nine years, so if you've been meaning to get in for a last meal, don't wait. Over on Granville Island, the team behind Baan Lao is opening two new concepts this summer, something to look forward to. And if you want something a little different tonight, Le Tigre and Toki Doki are reuniting for one night of Japanese street food at Torafuku on Main Street.

Tonight is music night. Begonia is playing the Hollywood Theatre at 7:00 PM, both the Ticket show and the Fantasy Life Tour, Rayna Greenberg is at The Rio Theatre at 7:00 PM, and Chris Murphy is at The Fox Cabaret at 7:00 PM, so pick your room and get there early. If sports is more your thing, the Vancouver Whitecaps FC take on San Diego FC at BC Place at 7:30 PM. Both the Rio and the Fox are indoor, so the weather won't factor into those plans, but if you're heading to BC Place, dress for the cold walk back.

Have a good one, and see you on the seawall.
