Grey, Wet and Cold, but Plenty to Do Tonight in Vancity

Morning, Vancity. It's a proper raincity Thursday: 7 degrees with light rain sitting over the city all day. Grab the umbrella you'll forget at the bus stop, leave a bit of extra time for the walk to the stop, and dress in layers you can peel off once you're indoors. There's no UV to worry about, but the rain's going to hang around, so plan your errands for the dry gaps if you can find them. Sunset is 5:56 PM, so if you're heading out tonight, you'll be doing it in the dark.

If you take the bus, check your trip before you leave. A few runs are cancelled this morning due to an operational issue. The R4 UBC Exchange trips out of Joyce Station at 7:18 and 9:04 are off, and so are the 100 trips between 22nd Street Station and Marpole Loop at 7:07 and 8:56 (leaving from the Marpole side), plus the 100 runs going the other way at 6:14 and 7:55. Down in South Surrey, the 361 out of 128 Street and 16 Avenue has its 6:57 and 8:59 departures cancelled. If you're on one of those routes, give yourself a buffer or line up a backup.

On the local front, COPE took four council seats and eight park board and eight school board seats in the Vancouver election, and Ken Sim is handing the mayor's office to the Green Party's Pete Fry. Vancouver voters also approved $790 million in borrowing for the city's 2027-30 capital plan, which will be a lot of street and building work to watch over the next few years. Over in B.C., Lorne Doerkson is the premier-designate, and he's already facing a time crunch to get his tax cuts done in his first 100 days.

For lunch or dinner, Hook Seabar on Denman is closing after nine years, so if you've been meaning to get in for a last seafood night, don't wait. Baan Lao's team is opening two concepts on Granville Island this summer, which is worth keeping an eye on. And if you're in the mood for something a bit more adventurous, Le Tigre and Toki Doki are reuniting for one night of Japanese street food at Torafuku on Main Street.

For the evening, UBC's Thunderbirds open their home basketball season against the TWU Spartans at Thunderbird Stadium at 5:30 PM. Later on, Joy Oladokun plays The Heavy Things Tour at the Hollywood Theatre at 7:00 PM, and Lizdek with Synova is at The Pearl at the same time. Hockey fans can catch the Chilliwack Jets taking on the Richmond Sockeyes at Minoru Arena at 7:00 PM. If you want something earlier in the day, the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra is doing Beethoven's Vienna at the Orpheum at 2:00 PM. Everything tonight is indoors, which suits this weather just fine.

Stay dry out there, and have a good one, friends.
