Friday in Vancity: Cool, Clear, and Ready for the Weekend

Morning, Van. It's a crisp six degrees out there this Friday, partly cloudy with barely any UV to speak of, so a jacket and a decent pair of shoes will do you fine. You've got nearly ten hours of daylight, with the sun going down at 5:55 this evening, which means that if you're planning a walk on the seawall or a stroll down the Drive after work, get it in before the light goes. After dark it'll be properly chilly, so bring a layer for the walk home.

If you're heading out on transit, check your route before you leave the house. The 100 has a detour through Marpole until 7:00 tonight, sending buses off their regular path to Granville and 71 Avenue before they rejoin Hudson Street. The 116 is running a detour out in Metrotown and Edmonds after a motor vehicle accident, rerouting through Keith Street, Greenall Avenue, Marine Way and Glenlyon Parkway before getting back on track. Also worth knowing: the northbound Burrard stop at West 3rd is closed through today, so plan on walking a block or two to catch your ride.

On the local front, the Tri-Cities housing market keeps cooling, with home prices still slipping and failed listings climbing toward half of Port Moody sales. Over in Kitsilano, a proposed rental tower has grown to 26 storeys and now includes 99 hotel rooms. Metro Vancouver's outgoing board also votes today on a $914 household budget, while mayors-elect are pushing for a delay. And COPE came away with four seats on Vancouver council, plus four each on the park and school boards, which is going to make for some interesting meetings ahead.

For eats tonight, it's worth knowing that Hook Seabar on Denman Street is closing after nine years, so if you've been meaning to get in there, don't wait. Baan Lao's team is opening two new concepts on Granville Island this summer, something to look forward to. And if you want something bold, Le Tigre and Toki Doki are reuniting for one night of Japanese street food at Torafuku on Main Street.

Tonight's a big one. The UBC Thunderbirds take on the SSK Huskies at Thunderbird Stadium at 6:00 for FRIGHT FEST, and if football's not your thing, the Vancouver Symphony is playing The Nightmare Before Christmas in concert at the Orpheum at 7:00. Cat Clyde is on at The Pearl, and DJ Shadow brings his electronic set to the Commodore Ballroom at 7:00, which is the kind of night that sets up the whole weekend. Keep the weekend in mind too: the Grey Cup playoffs hit BC Place on Saturday, and Halloween raves are going all night.

Have a good one, and cheers for reading. Stay warm out there.
