Cold Sunday, clear skies, and a full night of live music

Morning, Van. It's 3°C out there with clear skies, so the Sunday is yours to spend, but dress in layers, because that cold is going to bite if you're standing around at the seawall. The UV is low at 2.0, so sunglasses will do the job more than sunscreen. Sunset is at 5:51 PM, which gives you a good long daylight stretch, but once that sun drops behind the hills, the city goes dark quickly, so plan your outdoor walks for the afternoon.

If you're heading out to the seawall or Kits for a stroll, bring a warm hat. The air is clean and bright today, and that cold, clear light is worth a walk even if the wind has a bit of an edge.

For anyone heading out and about today, a heads-up: starting November 3, the elevator at Patterson Station is closing for replacement, with work expected to wrap up in spring 2027. If you use that station regularly, plan on adding up to 30 minutes to your trip while the detours are in place. It's a Sunday, so you may not notice it today, but it's worth knowing before the week starts.

On the local news front, the Vancouver Giants beat the Victoria Royals 6-1 in Langley, which is a good result for the hockey crowd. The Whitecaps finished first in the West, which means they'll have home-field advantage in the MLS playoffs, a nice thing to have in your back pocket. Also worth knowing: Surrey is warning that fireworks fines can reach $50,000 ahead of Halloween and Diwali, so if you're thinking about setting something off, don't. And if you're into the night sky, several meteor showers and 'fireballs' are set to peak over Metro Vancouver this November, so keep an eye out after dark.

If you're looking for something to eat today, Hook Seabar on Denman Street is closing after nine years, so if you've been meaning to get in there, don't wait. Baan Lao's team is opening two concepts on Granville Island this summer, which is one to look forward to. And if you want to do something a bit more adventurous, Le Tigre and Toki Doki are reuniting for one night of Japanese street food at Main Street's Torafuku, a rare treat for anyone who loves a good night out.

Today's marquee is the Vancouver Whitecaps FC against the Seattle Sounders FC at BC Place, kicking off at 1:30 PM. It's a big one for the home crowd, and BC Place will be buzzing. Tonight, the early music is kicking off with Davide De Pierro at The Rio Theatre at 4:00 PM, and there's electronic music at the Commodore Ballroom, with Parra for Cuva at both 7:00 and 8:00 PM. If you're after something a bit heavier, Sunn O ))) plays The Pearl at 8:00 PM.

So here's the plan: catch the soccer at BC Place, then head to a show before the weekend gets crowded. Dress warm, enjoy that clear afternoon light, and I'll see you out there.
