Mild, grey Tuesday in Vancity — hockey, Plini, and a dry spell to enjoy
Eight degrees and mostly cloudy, a Canucks game tonight, and a couple of rock shows if you want a late night out.
Morning, Vancouver. It's eight degrees out and mostly cloudy, so nothing dramatic on the forecast, just a grey, cool Tuesday. UV is about as low as it gets, so sunscreen can stay in the bag. Sunset is 5:48 PM, which leaves a good nine hours and forty-five minutes of daylight to work with. If you're planning anything outdoors after work, aim for the earlier part of the evening, and bring a layer you don't mind getting a bit damp.
On the way in, the West Coast Express Train 2 out of Mission City is running about ten minutes late east of Port Haney because of a mechanical issue, so if you're riding it, build in a little slack. Tomorrow, Wednesday, the stop on Westbound E King Edward at Fraser has been moved about 50 metres west because of construction, and the Eastbound Granville stop at Ledway is still closed until Wednesday, November 4. If you're catching buses along either one, check your stop before you head out. Heads-up for later in the week too: Canada Line crews are doing track work on Thursday, November 5, starting at 11 PM and running until the end of service. Trains will single-track across the North Arm Bridge between Marine Drive and Bridgeport, so if you're out late Thursday, give yourself extra time.
A few local stories worth knowing this morning. Blackstone and a couple of Canadian pension funds are set to buy into LNG Canada, and environmental groups are not happy about it. Vancouver police have arrested a suspect in a stranger assault in the Downtown Eastside. Environment Canada says October 2026 ranks among our ten driest Octobers in 130 years, which explains the lack of rain lately. And in Surrey, council was sworn in this week, with five women and four men taking their seats after a short forty-minute ceremony.
For food, Hook Seabar on Denman Street is closing after nine years, so if you've been meaning to go, this is your last chance to say goodbye. If you're after something more festive, Le Tigre and Toki Doki are reuniting for one night of Japanese street food at Torafuku on Main Street. Baan Lao's team is also opening two concepts on Granville Island this summer, so keep that one on your radar.
Tonight, the Canucks host the Anaheim Ducks at Rogers Arena at 7 PM, so if you're a hockey person, the place will be loud and the crowd will be into it. If you'd rather hear something live, Plini is at the Commodore Ballroom, with Night Verses opening, and the doors are early at 6 PM. Dav Pilkey is at the Chan Centre at 7:30 PM for a more family-friendly evening, and King Buffalo with L.A. Witch are at The Pearl at 8 PM if you're after something heavier and moodier. Since it's indoors everywhere tonight, the weather doesn't much matter.
Looking ahead to the weekend, the Smashing Pumpkins headline Rogers Arena on Friday, and Cirque du Soleil is running all weekend under the tent. Sienna Spiro is also touring through, so there's plenty to pick from.
Enjoy the evening, and stay dry if you can. See you on the seawall.
