Clear, crisp Wednesday — sunshine, a smoky Gilmore snag, and a big night out

Morning, Vancity. It's a clear, cold one out there at 4°C, and the sky should stay bright all day with a UV of just 2.0, so sunglasses are the main thing you'll need, not sunscreen. Pack a warm layer for the first leg of the commute and expect it to feel milder by the afternoon. Sunset is at 5:46 PM, which gives you a solid 9 hours and 41 minutes of daylight, so there's plenty of room for lunchtime walks on the seawall or a bit of errand running before dark.

If you ride the Millennium Line, be aware that service at Gilmore Station has been suspended since 5:50 AM because of heavy smoke at the station. Plan on a bus or a longer route until it's sorted out, and check for updates before you head to the platform. Also keep in mind the up escalator from the Compass vending machine level to the Waterfront-bound platform at Expo Line King George Station is out of service until 4:00 PM Thursday for maintenance, so if you use that station, take the stairs or allow extra time. Overnight road sweeping is wrapping up on Highway 99, through West Vancouver, and the north end of the Lions Gate Bridge down to the south end of the Stanley Park Causeway, and it's done by 5:00 AM, so most drivers won't notice it by the time they're on the road.

In local news, Vancouver police have arrested a suspect in a stranger assault outside the Art Gallery. Environment Canada also says October 2026 ranked among Vancouver's 10 driest Octobers in 130 years, which explains a lot about how dry and bright the past few weeks have felt. Over in Surrey, the new council was sworn in this week, with five women and four men taking their seats in a 40-minute ceremony. And on the business side, Metro Vancouver tech firms Thinkific and Ideon have both named new senior finance and revenue leaders.

For lunch or dinner, Jimmy's Place in Coquitlam, a strip-mall breakfast spot open since 1984, has the kind of loyal following that tells you everything you need to know about the food. If you're after something different, Baan Lao's team is opening two new concepts on Granville Island this summer, so it's worth keeping an eye on that. Sadly, Hook Seabar on Denman Street is closing after nine years, so if it's been on your list, get there soon.

Tonight's got a lot going on. Sienna Spiro: My House Tour runs at the Vogue Theatre at 7:00 PM and again at 8:00 PM. Cirque du Soleil's Luzia is under the big top at 8:00 PM, and Cardinal Bloom plays the Biltmore Cabaret at 9:00 PM. Since tonight's indoors across the board, the cold won't matter once you're inside, so pick your vibe and go. Whichever you choose, dress for the walk home, because a clear November night will get cold fast.

Enjoy the sunshine while it lasts, and cheers for making it through to Wednesday.
