Clear, crisp Thursday in Vancity — dress warm, mind the Marpole detour
Six degrees and bright skies, a few commute snags to plan around, and a big night of live music ahead.
Morning, Van. It's a crisp one out there at 6°C with clear skies, so grab a proper layer, because it's cold enough that the first hour walking to the bus will feel sharp. The sun's out and UV is barely there at 1.0, so sunglasses are about glare, not sunburn. Sunset comes at 5:45 PM, which gives you a good nine and a half hours of daylight, so there's plenty of room for a lunchtime walk along the seawall before the early dark settles in.
If you're heading out for the commute, the main thing to know is the Marpole Loop detour that's in place today from 5:30 AM until 7:00 PM. Construction has the regular route rerouted through Granville Street and 71 Avenue, then down Hudson Street before rejoining the normal path, so give yourself a few extra minutes if that's your line. Over in Burnaby and Surrey, the Carvolth Exchange detour is running nightly through this week until Friday, so if you're anywhere near there after dark, plan for the 156 Street and 92 Avenue reroute. And if you're catching anything out of Lonsdale Quay tomorrow, know that a detour runs from 7:00 AM to 5:00 PM on Friday, routing through Grand Boulevard, 14 Street and Sutherland Avenue. The good news is the stop at Denman and Comox on the southbound side is open again, so that one's back to normal.
On the news side, the big talk is the B.C. liquor ban on U.S. alcohol, which stays in place until the trade war is over, according to incoming premier Doerkson. The provincial privacy watchdog is also looking into Crime Stoppers after a tip data breach, which is worth keeping an eye on if you've ever used the service. And Vancouver police have arrested a suspect in a stranger assault outside the Art Gallery, so that's one to be aware of if you're downtown this week. On the business front, Canfor reported a net loss after restructuring but says it's cautiously optimistic about the road ahead.
For lunch or a bite after work, there's a fresh option coming to Richmond: Wabi Izakaya and Sushi Bar is taking over the former Manzo space on Capstan Way. If you're craving a classic, Jimmy's Place in Coquitlam has been serving its strip-mall breakfast crowd since 1984, and the regulars swear by it. And for a coffee fix, Strange Fellows has opened Creatures Coffee with a refillable tin program for premium beans, which is a nice way to cut down on waste.
Tonight's a real music night. Smashing Pumpkins are at Rogers Arena on their Rats In A Cage tour at 7:00 PM, so if you're into '90s alt-rock, that's the one to be at. Quadeca is at the Rickshaw Theatre, SYML is at the Commodore Ballroom, and Sienna Spiro's My House Tour is at the Vogue Theatre, all at 7:00 PM. All of those are indoors, so the cold doesn't matter. Sports fans, the CW Women's Soccer Final Four semifinals are at Thunderbird Stadium out at UBC, with the first match at 4:00 PM and another at 5:00 PM, so if you're up that way it's a good afternoon of football in the cool air.
Have a good one, Van. Dress warm, leave a bit of extra time for the detours, and enjoy the clear sky while it lasts.
