Ensemble Theatre Company's production of Tennessee Williams' "A Streetcar Named Desire" finds unexpected intimacy in the cramped, almost naked Kowalski apartment—where Blanche DuBois arrives with her elaborate illusions and nowhere to hide them.

Chris Lam's staging strips Emily Dotson's set back nearly to its frame, removing walls and leaving the audience only a few feet from the action. A comically narrow red curtain serves as the apartment's sole privacy, a flimsy barrier against the volatility simmering in the space. The result is as immersive as it is invasive, collapsing the distance between stage and audience so that Stanley's violent outbursts and Blanche's desperate performances feel inescapably close.

Cat Smith moves fluidly through Blanche's contradictions—charm, flirtation, melodrama—sometimes within a single speech. She delivers Williams' acerbic dialogue with comic timing that gets big laughs before the rug pulls out. Smith makes Blanche's survival strategy legible: one more fib, one more carefully curated outfit, one more drink. For a long time, it worked. Here, you understand why.

Terrell Clarricoates' Stanley is physical and prowling, confident in his masculinity as performed through a bowling shirt, a black tee, or no shirt at all. His violent outbursts—chairs hurling, plates smashing—are the moments where Clarricoates is most convincing, though the quieter moments could use more variation.

The production runs through July 18 at the Jericho Arts Centre as part of Ensemble Theatre Festival: Bloodlines.
