Bard on the Beach is back at Vanier Park from June 9 through September 19, bringing outdoor Shakespeare with mountain and ocean views to one of Vancouver's most iconic summer settings.

This year's lineup spans comedy, tragedy, and bold contemporary reinterpretations. On the BMO Mainstage, The Merry Wives of Windsor transforms Shakespeare's comedy into a soccer-inspired story set in a fictional Vancouver suburb, while Macbeth plunges into a darker dystopian world shaped by power and political unrest. The Douglas Campbell Theatre features Goblin: Oedipus with the festival's popular Goblin performers, alongside Antigone, a contemporary adaptation by local playwright Kate Besworth.

"What excites me most about the 2026 season is how boldly we're connecting timeless stories with the world our audiences are living in today," says Kim Vande Kuyt, marketing director of Bard on the Beach. "We've never leaned quite this far into current events."

One of the biggest misconceptions is that you need to be a Shakespeare expert to enjoy the festival. Productions lean into humour, energetic music, and contemporary storytelling, making them accessible whether you're a longtime theatre fan or attending live theatre for the first time. Performances take place in comfortable, professional theatre tents with padded seats — not on the beach itself.

The 2026 season is making the festival more accessible. Ticket prices now start at $30, with 50% off child and youth tickets, 25% off Wednesday matinees for seniors, and an additional Family Day. Accessible seating has been expanded.

The waterfront setting itself is part of the appeal. Arriving on a summer evening, surrounded by mountains and ocean views as the sun sets over English Bay, creates a sense of occasion before the performance even begins. It's the kind of experience that works equally well for a date night, a group outing, or a spontaneous summer plan.
