When Bill Haley and His Comets took the stage at Kerrisdale Arena on June 27, 1956, they ignited the first rock and roll concert in Vancouver's history.

The show drew more than 6,000 teenagers into a frenzy. The crowd's energy was so intense that police officers were called to manage the scene, particularly when teenagers attempted to rush the arena floor to dance. One officer described the chaos as though "someone sprayed the place with itching powder."

The event marked a generational turning point. Critics of the era dismissed rock and roll as a fleeting fad with no musical merit, claiming it "appeals only to emotions." The establishment's skepticism only intensified after Haley's Vancouver performance demonstrated the genre's undeniable power to captivate young audiences.

Haley's show arrived during rock and roll's explosive North American rise in the 1950s. Before that June night, Vancouver audiences knew the music primarily from published accounts and recordings. The live performance changed everything, establishing the city as part of a continent-wide cultural shift toward a new sound.
