North Vancouver's long-awaited Harry Jerome Community Recreation Centre opens to the public Saturday, July 25, after more than 20 years of planning.

The $230-million complex in Central Lonsdale is one of the largest civic projects ever undertaken by the City of North Vancouver. Opening day runs 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., with a formal ceremony, performances, food trucks, games, crafts, and facility tours.

The 188,000-square-foot centre includes a 25-metre, 10-lane lap pool, a leisure pool with lazy river, an NHL-sized ice rink with seating for 500, a full gymnasium, fitness and studio spaces, and community amenities like a kitchen and art rooms. Outside, there's a children's playground, skate park, and sports courts.

The Silver Harbour Senior's Activity Centre will also open the same day as part of the civic precinct renewal. Construction began in 2022, and local firm Smith Bros. & Wilson built the complex — the same firm that constructed the original Harry Jerome Recreation Centre six decades ago.
