A Royal Canadian Legion branch in North Vancouver is turning to the community to help cover a $345,594 mandatory strata levy for essential building repairs.
The #118 branch on West 15th Street must pay the levy after their strata corporation completed a depreciation report identifying work needed on the building envelope and parking slab. The first payment of $175,000 is due September 1, with the full amount required by December 1. If the Legion can't pay on time, they'll face interest charges on bridge financing.
Legion president Eva Hinchliffe said the branch, which has operated for decades as a community hub hosting darts, pool, bingo, and trivia nights, cannot absorb the cost from daily operations. They've launched a GoFundMe and are accepting donations via cheque, cash, bank deposit, or e-transfer to [email protected].
So far, the Legion has raised over $1,500 online and roughly $20,000 through other methods. Hinchliffe stressed the branch's role in the community: over the last 20 years, it has raised nearly $1.6 million through its annual poppy campaign to support veterans, cadets, and the Lions Gate Hospital Foundation. The branch is celebrating its centennial birthday this Friday.
