Out-of-control wildfire spreads near Port Moody as crews battle Belcarra blaze

An out-of-control wildfire is burning in Belcarra Regional Park near Port Moody, with emergency crews from multiple agencies responding to contain the human-caused blaze.

The fire was discovered on Wednesday, August 5 in the area behind Crystal Creek and has grown to approximately 0.8 hectares—roughly the size of three Canadian Football League fields. BC Wildfire Service, Sasamat Volunteer Fire Department, Port Moody Fire Department, and Metro Vancouver's wildfire team are all on scene, supported by three helicopters and air tanker support dumping water on the flames.

The fire sits within 500 metres of several luxury homes on Black Bear Way, Fern Drive, and Crystal Creek Drive. BC Wildfire Service says there is currently no immediate threat to nearby structures, critical infrastructure, or public safety, though conditions remain fluid. The blaze is highly visible from across the Lower Mainland—residents in Port Moody, Coquitlam, and North Vancouver have reported seeing smoke.

The Village of Anmore has asked residents to avoid the area and give emergency crews space to work. Local residents reported hearing constant helicopter and siren activity, with some attempting to reach Buntzen Lake but being turned away due to evacuation precautions.

The park itself is an 11-square-kilometre waterfront property operated by Metro Vancouver, located north of Port Moody and just west of Anmore. The Imperial Oil storage tank facility sits to the south. Crews are working to prevent the fire from spreading further while monitoring changing conditions. BC Wildfire Service warned that hot, dry conditions returning to the province could allow fire activity to increase, with holdover fires potentially becoming visible as weather shifts.
