Thirty-seven students received a total of $120,000 in scholarships at an award ceremony Wednesday at Kwantlen Polytechnic in Richmond.

The Jean Ip Foundation, a non-profit established by entrepreneur Jean Sheung-Chi Ip, awarded two scholarships worth $10,000 each and 13 scholarships worth $5,000. An additional 25 students from the Richmond School District, Burnaby School District, Vancouver School Board, and Richmond Christian School each received $2,000 scholarships.

The ceremony drew local dignitaries, including Vancouver Deputy Mayor Lenny Zhou, along with families of the recipients and foundation volunteers.

"Investing in education is an investment in our future," Zhou said to the gathering.

Ip, who was born in Hong Kong in 1938 and immigrated to Canada in 1973, founded the organization after building a career in the real estate sector. Beyond administering scholarships, the Jean Ip Foundation donates rice to seniors in need and supports organizations like the Richmond Christmas Bureau. This is the foundation's third year distributing scholarships.
