The City of Vancouver has completed a $20-million sewer replacement project on Granville Street in Marpole, ending a year of significant traffic disruptions in the neighbourhood.
The work focused on the segment between West 59th Avenue and West 62nd Avenue, involving the renewal and separation of 700 metres of combined sewer pipes into dedicated stormwater and sanitary sewer systems. The upgrades will increase the sewer system's capacity to handle heavy rainfall and accommodate long-term population growth from new development in the area.
Construction began in Fall 2025, with a major phase earlier this year that temporarily reduced Granville Street to one lane in each direction. In addition to sewer work, the restoration included renewal of 600 metres of sidewalk and improvements to curbs, gutters, tree pits, and road surfaces.
Mayor Ken Sim said the project reflects the city's commitment to investing in neighbourhoods. "Delivering core infrastructure while creating a more vibrant and resilient Marpole supports local businesses and improves quality of life for residents every day." The city has a long-term goal of separating combined sewer systems across Vancouver to increase capacity and reduce environmental impact.
