158 affordable homes now open in Victoria
Caledonia project adds apartments and townhomes with rents tied to household income, part of $19B provincial investment.
The B.C. government has opened 158 new affordable homes in Victoria as part of a larger provincial housing push.
The Caledonia, located at 1211 Gladstone Avenue, includes 97 apartments and 61 townhomes. Residents began moving in during March. More than half of the homes have two, three, or four bedrooms, helping meet demand for larger rental units for families.
The property features landscaped outdoor space, rain gardens, urban gardening areas, an outdoor playground, and a 1,450-square-foot amenity space.
Under the Community Housing Fund program, most rents are set at no more than 30 percent of a household's income. The homes are owned and operated by Capital Region Housing Corporation.
Two additional projects are underway in the region. Verdier, located at 1183 Verdier Avenue in Central Saanich, will provide 110 rental homes with more than half having two or more bedrooms and childcare space for up to 16 children; completion expected in 2028. Cedar Hill Library and Affordable Housing at 3950 Cedar Hill Road in Saanich will include a new public library on the ground floor and 210 rental homes in two residential towers; expected completion 2030.
The projects are part of a $19 billion housing investment by the B.C. government.
