B.C. Finance Minister Brenda Bailey announces early-stage cancer diagnosis

B.C. Finance Minister Brenda Bailey announced Thursday evening that she has been diagnosed with early-stage, treatable cancer and will receive treatment later this summer.

Bailey, the NDP MLA for Vancouver-South Granville, said in a LinkedIn post that she and Premier David Eby have spent recent weeks planning her path forward. "I will be receiving treatment later this summer and anticipate returning to work in time for the fall legislative session," she wrote. "We will have more to say tomorrow."

Whether Bailey will remain in her Finance role during treatment or whether a temporary replacement will take over her portfolio remains unclear. The announcement did not address a potential cabinet shuffle.

Bailey has held the powerful Ministry of Finance since November 2024, following the provincial election and the political retirement of Kootenay West MLA Katrine Conroy. Over the past two years, she has overseen the NDP government's cost-cutting efforts as the province faces mounting budget pressures—finishing $7.7 billion in the red in 2025-26 and projecting a $13.3 billion deficit in 2026-27.

This week, Bailey touted the reduction of last year's deficit from an original projection of $10.9 billion, mainly through a $2.6 billion settlement the province received from tobacco companies. At the same time, the government faces increased costs from a mediated agreement with the B.C. General Employees' Union that will give government workers three percent annual salary increases for each of the next four years—a commitment that, when extended across all public sector workers through the shared mandate, could add around $16 billion to salary costs over four years.
