BC NDP discloses 334,600 acres committed to First Nations land transfers

The BC NDP government has disclosed 334,600 acres (135,425 hectares; 1,354 sq. km) of provincial Crown land currently committed to First Nations through modern treaty and incremental treaty agreements, according to the province's audited financial statements for the 2025/2026 fiscal year released Monday, Aug. 11.
The commitments span 20 First Nations or First Nations groups across British Columbia. The two largest individual allocations go to Kitsumkalum at approximately 113,150 acres and Kitselas at about 87,200 acres, together accounting for nearly 60 per cent of the total committed Crown land.
Other significant commitments include approximately 34,460 acres for Wuikinuxv, 23,410 acres for In-SHUCK-ch (involving Skatin and Samahquam), and 14,730 acres for Yekooche. Smaller commitments range from 425 acres for Nazko to 116 acres for Tla-o-qui-aht.
To contextualize the scale: the committed land is nearly 335 times larger than Vancouver's Stanley Park, 12 times the overall size of the City of Vancouver itself, and nearly half of the entire Metro Vancouver region's land area. Most of this committed land is concentrated in northwestern B.C., with other significant areas on the Central Coast, in the Lower Lillooet River area, and in the northcentral region near Fort St. James.
The provincial government has not disclosed which of the 20 First Nations have received final transfer of their committed Crown land versus which remain pending.
