British Columbia has reported 93 cases of cyclospora this year as of July 16, according to estimates from the B.C. Centre for Disease Control—typical numbers for this time of year, health officials say.

Dr. Mayank Singal, Public Health Physician for enteric, zoonotic, and vector-borne diseases at the BCCDC, said the agency is monitoring cyclospora infections "closely, given the outbreak in the U.S." He noted that cases of cyclospora are reported in B.C. every year. "Most cases are related to travel. Every spring and summer, BC also sees an increase in non-travel related cyclospora infections due to eating contaminated, imported raw produce."

Locally-grown produce is not known to carry cyclospora. In 2025, there were 220 cases of cyclospora in B.C.; in 2024, there were 150 cases.

South of the border, the situation is more serious. Since May 1, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control has received reports of 1,645 confirmed domestic cases of cyclosporiasis and is aware of more than 5,100 cases requiring further analysis. Michigan has reported over 3,000 cases—dramatically higher than its typical 50 cases annually. Ohio, West Virginia, and Kentucky have also reported elevated numbers.

Cyclospora infects the small intestine and causes watery diarrhea with frequent and sometimes explosive bowel movements. The BCCDC recommends washing hands before handling food, washing fruits and vegetables thoroughly before eating, cooking produce when possible, and never drinking untreated surface water.
