Fortis BC customers will see residential gas bills rise by about $1.57 per month starting next month, based on average consumption of 7.5 gigajoules.
The British Columbia Utilities Commission has approved the increase, which is driven by a higher percentage of renewable natural gas (RNG) being blended into the product. RNG is made from organic waste.
According to Fortis BC, individual bills will vary based on usage. The company does not mark up the cost of natural gas; "customers pay what it pays," the utility said. However, global supply and demand, weather, and economic developments affect prices in North America.
The voluntary designated RNG program, which currently costs $8.66 per month, will remain at the same price. Customers can opt into rates of up to 100 per cent RNG through that program.
The increase will be locked in until October 1, 2026, when the next rate review occurs.
