The George Massey Tunnel will close completely overnight twice this weekend as the Ministry of Transportation and Transit performs essential maintenance on the aging crossing.

Both northbound and southbound lanes will be shut Friday from 10 p.m. to Saturday 4:30 a.m., then again Saturday 10 p.m. to Sunday 4:30 a.m. The ministry says drivers should plan for alternate routes, naming the Alex Fraser Bridge as an option.

Emergency services and transit vehicles will be accommodated during the closures.

The tunnel, which opened in 1959 as a four-lane vehicle-only crossing, no longer meets the region's needs or modern seismic standards. The province has begun early construction work on a replacement eight-lane toll-free tunnel with a target opening date of 2030. A similar overnight closure took place in January for ongoing construction preparations.

Highway 99 is a vital trade route and key connection for communities on both sides of the Fraser River. The ministry urges drivers to check DriveBC for real-time traffic updates.
