A glacier lake northeast of Pemberton has burst, sending hazardous debris flows through Place Creek and threatening downstream communities. The Squamish-Lillooet Regional District issued an evacuation order Tuesday for more than 20 properties in the Gates Lake and Poole Creek areas, about 150 kilometres north of Vancouver.
The Place Glacier lake outburst is ongoing and expected to peak late Wednesday, June 30. The district says flows will continue for one to two days total. The same lake burst in 2024, releasing about 1.2 million cubic metres of water and sediment downstream — flows from this week's outburst are expected to be comparable.
Experts will monitor the situation to determine if any additional emergency responses are needed.
