Granville Street pedestrian zone extends through Labour Day after record FIFA World Cup crowds

Granville Street's temporary pedestrian zone will stay car-free for another seven weeks, running through Monday, September 7, after exceeding organizers' expectations during the five-week FIFA World Cup.

The five-block car-free zone in the Granville Entertainment District between Davie and Georgia streets originally ended July 19, when the tournament concluded. Downtown Van, the business improvement association that operated the pedestrian zone, decided to extend it to test how the street performs as a regular summer gathering space without a global sporting event.

During the World Cup, the pedestrian zone drew hundreds of thousands of visitors and became a defining feature of the city's tournament experience. "In every way," the crowds surpassed expectations, said Jane Talbot, president and CEO of Downtown Van.

The post-tournament version will shift focus from massive evening celebrations to daytime activities. Downtown Van plans live music, family-friendly entertainment, some sports programming, and smaller events designed to give people new reasons to spend time downtown—rather than trying to recreate the tournament's scale.

The extension will provide the first real-world test of how pedestrian-only Granville Street functions during a typical Vancouver summer. Downtown Van hasn't yet finalized pedestrian counts or completed a full assessment of the World Cup's economic impact on the district.
