British Columbians pursuing a driver's licence can now take their knowledge test from home, marking a major shift in how the province administers driving exams.

The Insurance Corp. of B.C. announced Tuesday that new drivers can take their online knowledge test from any location with a computer, internet, and webcam. The move applies to Class 5, 6, 7, and 8 licences—covering cars, vans, trucks, motorcycles, and all-terrain vehicles. Commercial licences (Class 1–4) still require in-person exams.

Previously, everyone had to visit an ICBC office. On average, the province conducts about 337,000 knowledge tests yearly. The online option aims to improve accessibility for people in rural and remote areas who previously had to commute long distances, while also reducing wait times at busy centres and freeing up staff to handle road tests.

The online test uses the same questions, passing mark, and 12 language options as the in-person version. ICBC will monitor via webcam to prevent cheating—identity verification, no other resources allowed, and only one person permitted to take the test.
