London Drugs plans to cut about 80 positions—roughly one percent of its workforce—as part of a retail leadership restructuring, according to an internal letter dated July 14.

Nick Curalli, president and chief operating officer of the Richmond-based chain, said the company has decided to "standardize the management compliment per store, resulting in reductions in some locations." A spokeswoman confirmed the decision but did not elaborate on which stores would be affected.

Communications manager Naomi Perks said the changes are part of efforts to adapt to shifting customer expectations and an increasingly competitive retail environment. The restructuring follows a March announcement of changes to the merchandising function, including a shift to a "category management model."

Curalli stated in the letter that London Drugs has not previously undertaken workforce reductions of this nature. The company said the changes are intended to increase efficiency, reduce operating costs, and strengthen its competitiveness.
