Three-time Cy Young Award winner Max Scherzer pitched for the Vancouver Canadians on Friday, July 3, in his first rehab appearance since being sidelined by a back injury.
The 41-year-old threw three innings at a sold-out Nat Bailey Stadium, where 6,500 fans filled the stands to watch his return. Scherzer gave up two earned runs on three hits while striking out three, throwing 41 pitches through his outing. A standing ovation greeted him when he took the mound.
Scherzer has been out of the Toronto Blue Jays lineup since June 10 and is rehabbing the back injury that has limited him this season. This was believed to be his only appearance with the Canadians; he is set to rejoin the Blue Jays in Seattle for their three-game series against the Mariners beginning Friday night.
The pitcher has struggled with injuries all season, starting just six games for the Jays and posting a 10.23 ERA through 22 innings, giving up nine home runs. Once his rehab progresses, he is expected to rejoin the Blue Jays' rotation. The organization doesn't expect him back before the All-Star break (July 13–16), with a full return likely shortly after.
