Mission RCMP have confirmed that human remains found in a forested area in Mission in September 2024 are those of Mary Gadbois, a woman reported missing on June 14 after not being heard from for an extended period.

According to police, Gadbois was estranged from her family, so the prolonged period of no contact was not unexpected. She was last known to be living in Mission in 2021. The remains were discovered by a passerby on the west side of Mission and underwent examination by the BC Coroner's Service before being identified.

"Investigators worked diligently to try to locate the missing woman, and eventually began looking into whether human remains found in Mission in 2024 may be those of the missing woman," RCMP said in a statement.

Police carried out an extensive search when the remains were initially found, but no additional evidence was located at the time. A cause of death was not determined.

"Mission RCMP send their sincerest sympathies to the woman's family, and hope that this news helps to bring some closure to what must have been a very difficult time in their lives," the detachment said.
