Metro Vancouver transit riders now have free access to Transit app's premium tier, a move TransLink announced as part of its World Cup preparation strategy.
The Montreal-based Transit app is already deeply woven into local commuting: nearly 300,000 TransLink riders use it monthly, opening it more than 14 million times per month. The app integrates real-time arrival data for buses, SkyTrain, and SeaBus, plus privately-operated False Creek ferries (Aquabus and False Creek Ferries), Mobi bike share, and Lime e-scooters. Passengers submit over 445,000 monthly "Rate-My-Ride" feedback responses through the app—a crowd-sourced quality meter for the entire system.
Transit app operates in nearly 1,200 cities across 39 countries and serves over 180 transit authorities in North America and Europe. It's the most popular public transit app in Canada, used by over two million Canadians—roughly 30 per cent of all Canadian transit riders.
Under the new deal, Metro Vancouver users get complimentary access to Transit Royale, the app's premium subscription tier. This unlock includes unlimited departure information (not just the next bus), expanded route-planning options, customizable themes and icons, and the ability to send real-time feedback directly to TransLink during trips. The free upgrade is already live and will continue for five years.
TransLink branding has been integrated into the app interface, and users can expect more personalized journey planning and enhanced service alerts. The partnership is explicitly framed as crowd management—preparing the region for an influx of World Cup visitors who will rely on transit to reach BC Place and the fan festival at Hastings Park. For locals, it's a permanent bonus: premium features stay free well beyond July.
