The University of British Columbia has placed 45th in the QS World University Rankings 2027, cementing its status as Canada's top-ranked school west of Ontario.

UBC is the only British Columbia university to make the list and one of only three Canadian schools in the top 100. The QS ranking evaluated more than 8,000 universities worldwide to identify 1,500 institutions representing "the best of the best" in international higher education.

UBC scored 83.9 out of 100. The university excels in reputation metrics, earning a near-perfect 99.6 for academic reputation and 96.8 for employer reputation — scores QS identifies as among the most important indicators in their methodology. UBC also scored 78.9 on employment outcomes, reflecting growing scrutiny of graduate job prospects as students question whether degrees deliver the returns they once promised.

The rankings reflect broader pressure on Canadian universities, particularly mid-tier institutions. While elite schools remain insulated by longstanding reputation, universities in the top 200 but outside the top 20 — including most Canadian schools — are feeling strain from declining international student recruitment and tightening government policy.

Other Canadian schools in the top 150 include McGill at 30, University of Toronto at 32, University of Alberta at 96, University of Waterloo at 113, and Western University at 142.
