Vancouver sportscaster John McKeachie, a 40-year broadcasting legend, has died

John McKeachie, one of Vancouver's most beloved sportscasters, has died at 82. Born and raised in Victoria, McKeachie enjoyed a 40-year broadcast career that made him a fixture across Vancouver's sports scene.

He spent 27 years as a sports anchor on BCTV from 1973 to 1999, hosting play-by-play and colour commentary on Vancouver Canucks and Vancouver Whitecaps broadcasts. From 1998 to 2000, he hosted CBC Vancouver's Hockey Night in Canada post-game show, "McKeachie's Hockey Talk." He also wrote a weekly sports column for The Province newspaper from 1997 to 2000.

McKeachie's radio work included Canucks and BC Lions hosting duties with CKNW, followed by stints at Team 1040 (2001 to 2003) and Mojo Sports Radio (2003 to 2005). His longtime colleague Bernie Pascall announced the news on social media.

Tributes poured in from peers across the industry. Bob Marjanovich said McKeachie was "a true legend" whose "passion for sports — and life — was amazing." Jeff Paterson called him "one of one. A true character and a legend of Vancouver sports media."

McKeachie was selected for the B.C. Hall of Fame in April 2026 and was to be formally inducted in the Class of 2026 this fall. The Hall of Fame recognized him for his "North America-wide contacts in the sports world," his ability at "breaking big stories first in the Vancouver market," and his "quirky sense of humour." In an interview in April, McKeachie said being chosen was "quite humbling" and that he was "thrilled" to be part of it.
