The Vancouver Whitecaps' MLS match against the Chicago Fire, scheduled for Thursday night at Soldier Field, was postponed due to unsafe air quality caused by wildfire smoke.
Chicago's air quality index sat at 388 Thursday afternoon—well above 300, which is considered hazardous to human health. While hourly forecasts predicted conditions would improve to safe levels by Friday, the decision was made to delay the match. The game will be replayed on Tuesday, October 6.
The postponement delays the MLS debut of Polish soccer legend Robert Lewandowski, who recently signed with Chicago. Whitecaps star Thomas Müller was looking forward to facing his former Bayern Munich teammate, but the match will now occur later in the season.
Vancouver will now make their MLS return on Wednesday, July 22 on the road against FC Cincinnati.
