Vancouver International Airport is bracing for one of its busiest weekends of the year as the summer travel season winds down. YVR is expecting approximately 350,000 travellers to pass through between Friday, Sept. 4, and Monday, Sept. 7, averaging 87,000 passengers daily.
Friday is expected to see 88,000 passengers, with Monday the busiest at 90,000. Saturday and Sunday are projected to be slightly quieter. Following the FIFA 2026 World Cup hosted in June, this long weekend caps what YVR is calling a "record-breaking summer travel season" at the airport.
The surge is driven by strong international activity, particularly from Asia and Europe. In July alone, cargo moving through YVR jumped 13 per cent compared to the previous year.
To manage the crowds, YVR is encouraging travellers to confirm flight details with their airlines or at yvr.ca, reserve parking in advance, and plan extra travel time before their flights. The airport has also upgraded security and boarding procedures to ease congestion. X-ray equipment at domestic checkpoints now allows travellers to leave laptops and liquids in their bags during screening. YVR has also deployed biometric identity verification tools at some boarding gates, allowing travellers to skip showing boarding passes and physical identification. So far this year, 500,000 passengers have used the biometric verification system.
