October brings ghost hunters to Calgary's dining tables. Several restaurants occupy buildings with reported hauntings—spirits that have allegedly lingered for decades.

Elephant & Castle (1503 4th St. SW) occupies a building that previously housed The Rose & Crown pub, one of YYC's most haunted. Staff and patrons report three spirits: a little boy who hides behind a furnace, a middle-aged woman dressed in white, and a man believed to be her lover.

Rouge Restaurant (1240 8th Ave. SE) sits in a building constructed in 1899 where the original owners tragically lost two children. Workers and guests report hearing sounds of children laughing and noticing items moving on their own.

The Hose and Hound (1030 9th Ave. SE), a former firehall-turned-pub, was featured on Creepy Canada for incidents experienced by staff and guests. The dishwasher has turned itself on and sprayed workers; oven doors have opened and slammed shut; one opening cook complained his shoelaces kept untying on their own.

The Cat N' Fiddle (540 16th Ave. NW) was previously a funeral parlour. Guests report a woman in a red dress who smells of lavender and a biker who revs his motorcycle up and down the bar.

The Deane House (806 9th Ave. SE) is considered one of Calgary's most haunted restaurants, with reports of a mysterious man smoking a pipe and a disconnected telephone that rings on its own.

Fairmont Palliser (133 9th Ave. SW), built over a century ago, offers dining at Hawthorn Dining Room. Sounds, footsteps, and sightings have been reported throughout the historic hotel.

Ironwood Stage & Grill (1229 9th Ave. SE) is rumoured to be haunted by a former production director who locks doors and traps people in rooms. Dining companions may be advisable.

Bow Valley Ranche, established in the mid-1800s along the river, has accumulated tales of hauntings over the years, many attributed to Charlie Yuen, a cook who worked there in the 1930s and was killed in a car accident—his dying wish to be buried at the ranch, though he ultimately was buried in China.
