Free trial week at Okotoks Seniors Club opens doors to 55+
Seniors' Week runs through Friday. No-cost access to card games, Tai Chi, day trips, live music, and more.
The Okotoks & District Seniors Club is celebrating Seniors' Week by opening its doors free to anyone 55 and over through Friday, June 5. Non-members can participate in any club activity or program without charge — a chance to sample what's drawing nearly 1,000 active members to the centre.
The club turns 25 this year and has become a destination for recent retirees, people new to town, and anyone looking to rebuild social life after loss. The calendar is packed: walking groups, card games, billiards, Tai Chi, line dancing, day trips, potluck suppers, and Friday night jam sessions open to the whole community.
Members pay just $20 yearly, with a $2 user fee per event. Those over 90 get free membership — more than a dozen members take advantage of it.
Club president Sharon Anderson said the draw is variety and a welcoming environment. "We offer as much as we possibly can in a variety of activities, so that as many seniors as possible can be here at the club making friends, socializing, just having some time with people their own age," she said.
Popular outings include bus trips to Stage West and Rosebud Theatre — giving members who don't drive a chance to get out, see the countryside, and spend time with friends. An ongoing speaker series covers wellness topics and challenges seniors face.
The club has outgrown its current space and is in early stages of looking for larger premises.
