Calgary's festival season opens Sunday with the Lilac Festival, transforming 4th Street S.W. into a massive street party stretching from 12 Avenue all the way to Elbow Drive. The free, all-ages event features over 500 vendor stalls selling artisan crafts, local goods, and international food from trucks scattered throughout.
Over 70 local musical acts and 45 dance groups are scheduled across multiple live stages. Jessie Dans kicks off the main stage, with performances running all day. Organizers have expanded the traditional footprint significantly — new sections include extensions down 17 Avenue and a dedicated late-night tent at Central Memorial Park. You'll also find extended restaurant patios and a massive kids activity zone with bouncy castles on 18 Avenue.
The forecast calls for a 60 per cent chance of showers with possible thunderstorms and a high of 13°C, so bring a jacket. The gates open at 10 a.m. and close at 6 p.m.
Parking is expected to be heavy. The Calgary Parking Authority recommends using nearby lots and parkades, arriving early, and using the MyParking app. Calgary Transit suggests skipping the hassle entirely — both Victoria Park and Erlton CTrain stations offer easy walking access to the festival. City crews are closing several major corridors starting early Sunday morning, so plan accordingly.
