The Calgary Stampede breakfast season kicks off next month with more than the standard pancakes and sausage — local restaurants and organizations are pushing the traditional morning spread into new territory.
Fourth Street in Mission is hosting a Pancake Showdown on July 2 from 9 to 11 a.m., where 13 businesses compete for the Golden Spatula Award. Expect rose and raspberry puff pancakes from The Gardens by Marlow, donair pancakes from Blowers & Grafton, and bourbon peach pancakes from Joyce on 4th. It's free, and the whole event runs along 4th Street S.W.
Omo Teppan & Kitchen in southwest Calgary takes the concept in a different direction with its 9th Annual Green Tea Pancake Stampede Breakfast on July 4 from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. (5222 Macleod Trail S.W., 403-764-3222). The Japanese restaurant layers in live music, games, and prizes alongside its signature green tea pancakes.
For the vegan crowd, Canela in Inglewood is hosting its annual free vegan pancake breakfast the same day from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. (1319 9 Ave. S.E.). Coffee, juice, fruit salad, and pancakes round out a morning partnered with the city, the Inglewood Business Improvement Area, and local animal rescue.
The Ismaili Muslim Community's 29th Annual Stampede Breakfast runs July 4 from 8 to 10:30 a.m. at the Calgary Headquarters Jamatkhana (1128 45 Ave. N.E.). Beyond pancakes and bharazi (a pigeon peas dish), attendees can explore a Aga Khan Foundation travelling exhibition called "Our Purpose, Our Potential."
