Airdrie recognized its 2026 Elite Athletes at a celebration event on May 28, honouring five individuals selected for their athletic achievements and community contributions.

The city's annual Elite Athletes program recognizes athletes who reach provincial, national, or international competition levels while demonstrating leadership as mentors and role models. Honourees are inducted onto the Athlete's Wall at Genesis Place.

This year's honourees are BMX racer Nico Diaz, recognized for competing at provincial, national, and international levels and for coaching local BMX teams; Ronin Xavier Thompson, who has captained the U17A Rockview Rage Lacrosse team, earned MVP and Rookie of the Year in high school football, and coaches young athletes; Colton Jackson-McConnell, who won gold at the U18 2025 Football Canada Cup and is recognized for leading his teams to multiple championships; baseball pitcher Braylee Schell, who has pitched for Team Alberta and volunteers at Tails to Tell animal shelter while coaching young girls in the sport; and triathlete Sofia Howell, who competes at Olympic levels with five international podium finishes and two U23 World Championship placements.

City councillors and Mayor Heather Spearman praised the athletes for their pursuit of excellence and community service. "We celebrate all of the athletes who not only strive for excellence in their sport, but who also give back to their community as leaders, mentors, and role models," Spearman said.

The nomination process runs year-round, with eligible nominees having lived in Airdrie for at least three years, made significant community impact, and reached national or international athletic achievement levels.
