Airdrie's Royal Canadian Legion Branch 288 is marking a century of service with a special 100-year anniversary bash on Friday, July 17.

The event will feature local dignitaries, a live emcee, special dance and musical performances, and the Legion is expecting nearly 50 veterans to be present to celebrate. "It's the 100th anniversary of the Legion in Airdrie, and we are throwing a party," said Connie Charbonneau, public relations officer with Branch 288. "We will have a meal provided for the veterans. Anyone else, the meal is there for purchase. We will have bands. We will have local dancers. We will have entertainment and full emcee on at the event. And it's going to be huge."

Veterans eat for free; other attendees can purchase food and drinks on site. Admission to the event is free.

Over the past 100 years, the Airdrie Legion has served veterans in need and provided a gathering place for them. The branch has also been the repository of communal memory around Airdrie's military and war history, highlighted each Remembrance Day. The Legion continues to serve the broader community through its Poppy Fund, Poster Contest, and other initiatives aimed at young people, particularly members of the local cadet corps.

The event starts at 5 p.m. at the Legion.
