Airdrie celebrates India's Independence Day August 15 at Nose Creek Park

The Indian Society of Airdrie (ISA) will host a celebration of India's Independence Day on August 15 at Nose Creek Park (temporary flagpole) from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

For Indians living abroad, the day carries meaning beyond historical commemoration. Maulik Shah, founder of ISA, said the celebration reconnects the diaspora with cultural identity and honors the sacrifices of freedom fighters. "It is a day to reconnect with cultural identity, celebrate unity among the diaspora, teach children about India's heritage, honour the sacrifices of freedom fighters, strengthen community bonds in a foreign land, and share traditions with the broader Canadian community," Shah said.

The Indian community's approach to celebration is guided by the concept of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam — a belief that the entire world is one family. "Independence Day is not only about remembering India's freedom, but also about sharing our heritage with the broader community, welcoming everyone with open hearts, and building bridges across cultures," Shah said.

Holding the celebration requires emotional strength, Shah added, because for many Indians abroad, the day reminds them where they come from and the identity they want their children to inherit. "Celebrating India's Independence Day in Airdrie is not just an event; it's a statement of pride. It shows that even thousands of kilometres away, the Indian community remains strong, united, and deeply connected to its roots."

Shah extended gratitude to the City of Airdrie for providing the temporary flagpole at Nose Creek Park. "These efforts help ensure that future generations, especially children born or raised in Canada, continue to feel the warmth, colour, and meaning of Indian traditions."

The celebration includes refreshments, free Indian flags for kids, and free Indian-themed tattoos, making it a welcoming, family-friendly event for everyone in the Airdrie community who wants to participate.
