Airdrie Fire Department crews were dispatched to a reported commercial structure fire in the 500 block of Centre Avenue at approximately 12:38 a.m. on Monday, June 29. Upon arrival, firefighters encountered heavy fire venting through the roof of the centre unit of the commercial strip mall.

Crews initially launched an aggressive interior attack on the fire before transitioning to a combination of defensive and offensive operations to protect neighbouring businesses. Fire Chief Mike Pirie said the fire was declared under control at approximately 3:30 a.m.

"Thank you to the firefighters and officers of Delta platoon for their hard work on this fire," Pirie said on Facebook. The chief also thanked partners at Rocky View Fire Service - Station 107 for their support, as well as RCMP, EHS Alberta, EMS, Fortis, and ATCO.

Crews remained on scene extinguishing hotspots and conducting overhaul throughout the evening, with road closures in effect until morning. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
