Airdrie's Genesis Place ice rinks are on track to reopen August 17, the city announced, ending a five-month closure that disrupted local hockey and ringette seasons.
On March 16, an ammonia leak was identified in a controlled area of the arena's refrigeration system serving both ice surfaces. Following an inspection, the city determined that replacing the system's condenser would be necessary, extending the closure well beyond the initially expected three weeks.
The extended closure has shortchanged much of the local hockey and ringette season's playoffs and regular play. A new condenser is now in place and ice production is underway. The city thanked the community for patience and expressed excitement about seeing athletes and families return to the ice soon.
