A man who allegedly stole a purse from someone sitting on a park bench in Bridgeland was hit by a truck while trying to flee the scene Friday around noon.

The man ran into the northbound lanes of Ninth Avenue S.E. with the purse. Calgary police say he was struck by a truck and trailer and was taken to hospital in life-threatening condition.

The driver of the truck remained at the scene. Police say the collision was not influenced by alcohol, drugs, or speed on the driver's part. Investigators are working to identify the man.
