Heel & Hoof Horse Rescue holds spring market and photo opportunity
Foothills County rescue opens its farm this Saturday with vendors, auctions, food, and a chance to pose with rescued horses.
Heel & Hoof Horse Rescue, operating on a 74-acre family farm in Foothills County since 2022, is hosting its annual Spring Market fundraiser this Saturday to support unwanted equines—many destined for slaughter.
The event runs 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 418113-16 St. West, just southwest of Okotoks. Expect 14 local vendors, a plant and garage sale, silent auction with donated gift baskets from local businesses, and a raffle for two NHL game tickets (Calgary Flames vs. Edmonton Oilers).
New this year: professional photos with the rescue horses. It's a draw for families looking for a unique memory and a way to support the operation.
Founder Ruth McDonald, who had been rescuing horses for decades before launching Heel & Hoof, said proceeds go toward feed, veterinary bills, farrier costs, and care for 24 horses the farm can accommodate per Foothills County regulations—a number the rescue reaches regularly.
Horses come from two primary sources: auctions and surrenders. Most stay about a year before finding new lives as show jumpers, trail horses, or other roles. The fundraiser helps make those transitions possible.
