High streamflow advisory for Sheep River in Okotoks

Heavy rain expected through Wednesday could raise stream levels; town activates emergency preparedness plan.

The Town of Okotoks has activated stage one of its Emergency Management Plan as a high streamflow advisory remains in effect for the Sheep River following significant rainfall expected through Wednesday.

Environment and Climate Change Canada is forecasting 50 to 100 millimetres of rainfall across central and south Alberta, with potential river flows between 65 and 150 cubic metres per second. Heavy rain is expected to continue through Wednesday morning.

A high streamflow advisory indicates stream levels are rising or expected to rise rapidly, though no major flooding is forecast at this time. Minor flooding in low-lying areas remains possible. The town's emergency management team is actively monitoring conditions and coordinating with regional and provincial partners.

Residents are advised to clear eavestroughs and downspouts, direct water away from foundations, and watch for pooling water in low-lying property areas. Free sandbags are available for pickup at the Okotoks Operations Centre parking lot at 1118 N Railway Street. Residents should stay away from riverbanks and fast-moving water, as conditions can change rapidly during high streamflow events.

The Highwood River in High River is also under a high streamflow advisory, with forecasted peak flows potentially reaching 250 cubic metres per second — far below the 2013 flood peak of 1,820. As of Sunday morning, High River's flow was 61.7 cubic metres per second at a depth of 1.9 metres. Beachwood and Mercer Lands remain closed to the public until further notice.
