Starting September 14, Okotoks residents can place used household batteries in a tied or sealed plastic bag on top of their black garbage cart on collection day, and the Town will pick them up as part of a new curbside program.
The Town of Okotoks is partnering with Call2Recycle Canada on a three-year pilot that runs two weeks each fall. This year's collection window runs September 14 to 25. Okotoks is only the second Alberta community to offer curbside battery collection through Call2Recycle, and the program is fully funded by Call2Recycle — no additional cost to taxpayers.
Most single-use household batteries weighing less than five kilograms will be accepted, including AA, AAA, C, D and 9-volt batteries. Residents who prefer not to wait for curbside collection can continue dropping batteries year-round at the Okotoks Eco Centre or at participating private drop-off locations.
Call2Recycle has been expanding battery recycling across Alberta since joining the national "Recycle Your Batteries, Canada!" program, with more than 2,000 drop-off sites now open across the province.
