Okotoks uses herd of goats to control invasive weeds
Town launches pilot program at off-leash dog park to reduce herbicide use.
The Town of Okotoks is deploying a herd of goats to tackle invasive weeds across a portion of its off-leash dog park in a pilot project designed to reduce reliance on chemical herbicides.
The goats will work the controlled area from June 1 to 20, grazing on grasses, weeds, and invasive plants. The animals have a natural preference for weeds and can access difficult-to-reach areas that machinery cannot, the town said.
Crew began installing fencing on the south side of the park on May 29. The off-leash dog park will remain partially open during the program, though users must avoid fenced areas. Dog owners are asked to keep pets away from the goats.
"Goats are an effective way to manage invasive plants," the town stated, and the project supports "long-term ecological balance in the area."
Residents are encouraged not to touch or disturb the animals. More details are available on the Town of Okotoks website.
