Okotoks Cinemas celebrates 30 years with free movies and 1990s nostalgia day

Okotoks Cinemas, the two-screen theatre on North Railway Street that opened in 1996, is celebrating 30 years with a full day of free movies, 1990s trivia, games, and prizes on Saturday, September 19.

The theatre's first films after opening on April 19, 1996, were Celtic Pride, Muppet Treasure Island, and Executive Decision. General manager Amber Wigg, who took the role in 2020, has steered the theatre through the pandemic and a major transformation. Shortly after her arrival, Wigg crowdfunded recliner seats—a move she credits with keeping the theatre's doors open during COVID-19 lockdowns. "We now know what consumers want. They want a comfortable experience. They want a powerful experience, something they can't get in their basements from their big screen TVs and their comfy couches," Wigg said.

The anniversary day will screen Space Jam at 1 p.m. and 4 p.m., and Twister at 7 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. Seating is first come, first served. Popcorn pricing will reflect 1990s nostalgia, with large popcorn costing $3.

Wigg's vision extends beyond the anniversary. She is working toward installing laser projectors (one theatre is already equipped), improving soundproofing, and hosting themed events. The theatre has built a loyal customer base—Wigg noted that regulars like Connie and Susan come every Monday. "I like creating an experience for people. And I love because we're a small theatre, we know that Connie and Susan are coming every Monday. That's what I love about working here: the people, because I've met so many people. We have repeat customers over and over again," she said.

Wigg credits neighbouring businesses, including Hub Town Brewery, 94 Take the Cake, and Awedity Creative, with supporting the theatre's seat fundraiser. "These people really helped give me the confidence to push forward with the fundraiser that got us the seats that we desperately needed to keep our doors open," she said.
